BO6 & Warzone devs reveal Season 2 anti-cheat & Ranked Play changes

Comprehensive guide to Call of Duty Season 2 anti-cheat improvements, Ranked Play updates, and gameplay enhancements

Season 2 Overview: Addressing Community Concerns

Following significant player feedback regarding cheating and server stability, Call of Duty developers have unveiled their comprehensive strategy for Season 2 improvements. The upcoming season focuses on three core areas: enhanced anti-cheat measures, Ranked Play refinements, and extensive gameplay optimizations.

Development teams for Black Ops 6 and Warzone have detailed their multi-faceted approach to tackle the most urgent issues players have reported. Anti-cheat enhancements and Ranked Play adjustments form the foundation of these improvements, with implementation scheduled for the Season 2 launch on January 28.

Activision originally committed to substantial anti-cheat upgrades at the beginning of 2025. When the January 3 and 9 updates failed to incorporate these promised changes, the community expressed growing concern about the timeline. The development team has now clarified that these critical security updates will deploy with Season 2’s arrival.

The waiting period concludes soon as developers roll out their coordinated plan to combat cheating, enhance server reliability, and resolve numerous Warzone bugs that have impacted gameplay consistency. These improvements represent the most significant security update since the games’ launch.

Enhanced Anti-Cheat Systems and Security Measures

Anti-cheat systems receive substantial upgrades in Season Two, featuring revised detection models for behavioral analysis targeting aim assistance manipulation, alongside expanded data points encompassing account credibility assessment and hardware identification to focus on repeat offenders.

These security enhancements incorporate better spam reporting mechanisms, advanced cheat identification, and driver protection systems. Players should notice reduced false positives while maintaining strong detection capabilities against sophisticated cheating tools.

Developers disclosed that more than 136,000 Ranked Play accounts have received permanent bans since the competitive mode’s introduction. This aggressive enforcement strategy demonstrates their commitment to maintaining competitive integrity.

  • Over 136,000 Ranked Play account bans since the mode launched
  • Enhanced cross-examination tools focused on reducing the time it takes to action accounts
  • New detection and warning systems for Spam Reporting by accounts
  • New detection and warning systems for repeat Playing with Cheaters behavior
  • New and improved client and server-side detections and systems
  • Major kernel-level driver update
  • Improvements to driver security ↳ Reinforced encryption process ↳ New tampering detection system

“Our security team continuously monitors match activities, identifying suspicious accounts that frequently appear in disrupted lobbies. Demonware specialists have pinpointed specific causes affecting all participants, with new Call of Duty server infrastructure improvements implemented this week to minimize targeted malicious activities affecting our systems and players.

While this challenge affects the entire gaming industry, we remain dedicated to combating individuals and organizations determined to undermine the gaming experience for legitimate players.”

Ranked Play Evolution: Cross-Play Controls and Match Features

Ranked play undergoes significant modifications in Season Two. Upon the season’s release, console users will gain the ability to disable cross-platform matchmaking, functioning for both Black Ops 6 and Warzone competitive modes.

Additionally, the Vote to Forfeit functionality returns, enabling teams to exit one-sided matches early. Surrendered matches register as standard defeats but avoid Skill Rating penalties. Combined with the incoming join-in-progress capability during Season Two, these changes should substantially improve the competitive mode’s accessibility.

We’ve heard the feedback from players about wanting the choice to toggle cross-play in Ranked Play since its launch earlier this season, and in the spirit of improving the gameplay experience, we’re returning to the way we’ve traditionally handled cross-play. In Season 02, we are enabling the ability to disable cross-play for console players who want to compete only against other console players. ↳ This is currently in testing and is planned to go live for both Black Ops 6 Ranked Play and Warzone Ranked Play during S02. We’ll be monitoring closely and will consider further changes to prioritize the integrity of the ecosystem, and we’ll have more details to share as we get closer to the launch of this feature.

The Vote to Forfeit feature is coming at Season 02 launch, which allows players to vote with their team to end a match early if the team is getting blown out, or you’ve lost a teammate. Forfeited matches count as a standard loss and do not result in SR penalties or suspensions.

The ability to rejoin Ranked Play matches is also planned for later in Season 02, which should help to ensure fuller teams in matches if players experience a disconnect.

Gameplay and Quality of Life Improvements

Season 2 introduces comprehensive gameplay refinements designed to enhance player experience across multiple dimensions. Weapon handling receives particular attention with reload acceleration across all firearm categories, ranging from 5% to 20% improvements depending on weapon type.

Movement mechanics undergo significant tuning with sprint-to-fire penalty reduction from 35% to 10% when jumping, complemented by 25% faster aim-down-sights speed during jumps. These adjustments aim to establish balanced jump-shot capabilities without making them the dominant movement strategy.

Weapon switching accelerates by 10%, effectively mirroring the Quick Grip Gloves Perk functionality from Modern Warfare. Burst-fire and semi-automatic rifles alongside low-tier pistols disappear from ground loot, providing more predictable weapon performance when scavenging.

Enhanced mobility includes increased jump velocity and consecutive jump elevation with one unmodified successive jump. Parachute mechanics improve with faster cut animation speed, significantly reducing weapon readiness time after cutting parachutes.

Audio directionality improves through reduced reverb effects for movement sounds produced by other players (footsteps, ascenders, parachutes). Combat Scout pings transform into outlines that don’t penetrate walls.

Gameplay & quality of life updates

• Weapon balance pass

• Bullet penetration updates

• Further reducing weapon motion when jumping, sliding, and diving with the Dexterity Perk equipped

• Improving player visibility in Kill Confirmed by reducing the height of dog tags

• Simplifying/expanding requirements for several Prestige Calling Card Challenges

• Later in Season 02, we’re planning on adding an icon over an opponent’s head when you shoot them if they have War Cry active, so you know they’ve got faster health regen. This should clear up confusion in firefights where you didn’t know why an enemy with more health was able to survive an engagement.

• Expanding the number of Featured Playlist slots

• Bringing Gunfight back to Featured Playlists

• Keeping Stakeout 24/7 in Featured Playlists and/or Quick Play

• Planning a “Small Maps Moshpit” shortly after season launch for camo grinders

High-profile bug fixes

• Gearhead will now properly increase the charge rate of Field Upgrades

• Free for All will accurately calculate the scoreboard by kills and the Winner’s Circle will accurately showcase the Top 3 FFA players

• Ninja will no longer be able to reset between respawns or round transitions in certain game modes

• Fixes and tuning updates for a large number of Calling Card Challenges

Equipment and Killstreak Balancing

Equipment systems undergo careful rebalancing to reduce spam tactics while maintaining strategic depth. Munitions Satchel capacity decreases to one additional item instead of two, addressing equipment overstocking concerns.

Maximum deployed tactical and lethal equipment reduces to two each from three, encouraging more deliberate trap placement strategies. Gas Grenade effectiveness diminishes with reduced radius, duration, and movement penalties, aligning with its intended role as area denial rather than lethal advantage.

Spy Camera outline effects no longer render through walls, while Advanced UAVs gain elevation indicators. Body Shield functionality receives limitations: no automatic release during free falls, removal of teammate wall outlines, and elimination of manual releases requiring executions to conclude.

New default Perk assignments include enhanced Dexterity (weapon component) for all Warzone participants and Mountaineer returning to Perk slot 1, replacing Dexterity with substantially improved fall damage reduction. Veteran Perk significantly decreases Gas Grenade damage ticks.

Equipment & Killstreaks

• Munitions Satchel now only provides 1 additional item, down from 2, to address overstocking and spamming equipment.

• Maximum deployed tacticals and lethals reduced to 2 each, down from 3, to make more purposeful trap plays.

• Gas Grenade radius, duration, and movement penalties reduced to bring in-line with the vision of a zoning tactical and less of a lethal crutch.

• Spy Camera’s outline effect no longer renders through walls.

• Advanced UAVs will now show elevation arrows.

• Body Shield functionality limited: ↳ No longer automatically releases players in free fall. ↳ No longer provides an outline of the victims’ teammates through walls. ↳ Removed manual release of players, keeping them alive – must end with an execution.

• The flares that fire out of Buy Stations when a player is bought back can now be pinged to increase visibility on redeployments.

• Match stat tracker font adjusted for better readability at lower resolutions.
