Complete guide to Destiny 2’s 8.2.6 update with meta analysis, weapon adjustments, and strategy tips
Update Overview and Key Changes
Destiny 2’s substantial May 6 update delivers the Rite of the Nine limited-time event alongside comprehensive sandbox modifications affecting both PvE and PvP gameplay. This represents the final major patch before the anticipated Edge of Fate expansion scheduled for summer 2025.
The Rite of the Nine event centers around dungeon-themed content featuring multiple reprised weapons, though their performance across different game modes remains uncertain pending community testing. Widespread rebalancing of weapon archetypes and exotic gear ensures significant meta shifts throughout Heresy Act 3’s remaining duration.
Most notable among the adjustments are continued reductions to Legacy Frame Pulse Rifle effectiveness, particularly targeting Redrix’s Estoc. This Stasis pulse rifle has maintained dominance across competitive tiers since its Heresy introduction, undergoing multiple previous nerfs. These latest modifications specifically aim to reduce its prevalence in mid-skill bracket matches.
Hunter capabilities also receive significant attention, with the On the Prowl Void Aspect and Radiant Dance Machines exotic both receiving nerfs. These elements have controlled Crucible meta since their implementation, especially when combining Radiant Dance Machines with The Last Word exotic hand cannon.
Pro Tip: With the meta shifting away from pulse rifle dominance, consider testing sidearms and SMGs in close-to-mid range engagements where the nerfed pulses now struggle.
Weapon System Adjustments
Pulse Rifle Balancing
The Legacy Frame intrinsic perk now decreases ADS damage falloff scalar by 0.1, reducing Battler and Estoc’s ADS damage falloff scalars from 1.7 to 1.6, aligning them with High Impact Pulse Rifles. BxR Battler’s Airborne Effectiveness stat improves from 10 to 21.
Common Mistake: Many players continue using pulse rifles at maximum engagement distances where the damage falloff changes now significantly impact time-to-kill. Adjust your positioning to maintain optimal effectiveness.
Exotic Weapon Updates
Note: Descriptions for both perks will be updated in a later release.
Ammo Economy and Special Weapons
Optimization Tip: The special ammo economy changes make aggressive special weapon play more sustainable in Crucible. Pair these with primary weapons that complement your engagement ranges.
Class and Ability Updates
Hunter Capability Adjustments
Radiant Dance Machines
- Aligned the hip fire bonuses to range and accuracy with the values granted by the Hip Fire Grip perk, instead of the Legacy Frame intrinsic perk.
- Reduced accuracy bonus for standard weapons by 60%.
- Reduced aim assist falloff distance bonus by 60%.
- Further reduced the accuracy bonus for specific Exotic weapons by an additional 25%.
- Developer note: based on the feedback we have gotten from mouse and keyboard (MnK) players using The Last Word with Radiant Dance Machines (RDM), we are looking into tuning the MnK-specific penalties down a bit in a future patch to make the weapon more usable on that input without requiring an Exotic.
On the Prowl (Void Aspect)
Warlock Exotic Reworks
Super and Melee Improvements
Prismatic Super Regen
Reduced scatter grenade damage vs. players by 15%.
Withering Blade (Stasis and Prismatic melee)
All Throwing Knife melees
- Tracking should be much more consistent now.
- That said, you still need to aim – don’t blame us if you miss on your own…
Lightweight Knife (Solar melee)
Fan of Knives (Solar and Prismatic melee)
Incinerator Snap (Solar Melee)
Lightning Surge (Arc Aspect)
Advanced Strategy: The improved throwing knife tracking makes solar hunter builds significantly more reliable in both PvE and PvP. Combine with exotic armor that enhances melee abilities for maximum effectiveness.
Gameplay Fixes and Quality of Life
PvP System Improvements
PvE Encounter Corrections
- Regular Taken Phalanxes no longer hold their shields in front. Taken Phalanxes and Dire Taken Phalanxes shake and contort.
- It’s tough holding shields up for that long.
Visual and Interface Updates
- More info about how we will allow both looks on this Ornament here.
Quality of Life Note: The special ammo crate timing fix creates more consistent PvP pacing, while the raid banner placement correction prevents unintended advantage in high-level PvE content.
