Based in Cologne, Germany, Wildemann completed some education abroad. Following a Melbourne, Australia year involving couch surfing, studies, and financial limitations, he experienced significant burnout. His game development future appeared uncertain temporarily.
However, an unexpected New Zealand journey ignited unprecedented creative passion.
“After Melbourne studies concluded, I dedicated two months to New Zealand relaxation,” Wildemann shared.
“Christchurch introduced us to Custard Square Bookshop—a simple wagon containing pre-owned books. Each volume carried identical pricing.
“An elderly man sat outside reading newspapers. Observing this scene sparked immediate realization: ‘This is my calling. I must abandon everything for this lifestyle.’
“This vision remained with me since 2019. Pandemic conditions only intensified its appeal.”
Visual charm represents one aspect, but Tiny Bookshop advances aspirational comfort further. Beyond aesthetics, the minute-to-minute experience intentionally prevents player overwhelm, unlike Wildemann’s earlier Melbourne struggles.
“Design uncertainty always returned me mentally to that Christchurch gentleman.
“Inventory decisions matter, but then you can relax without micromanagement—the bookshop essentially operates autonomously. This formed my core design principle.”

“One character might mention band involvement, then after approximately 15 gameplay hours, you could witness their performance. This approach creatively engages the fantasy of townspeople existing beyond your bookshop interactions.”
Advanced Strategy: Focus on building deep relationships with 2-3 regular customers initially rather than spreading attention thinly across all characters. Deeper friendships unlock more meaningful story arcs and valuable rewards.
What’s Next for Tiny Bookshop
After six years developing this concept, launch preparation has been understandably stressful for Wildemann. He eliminated coffee consumption completely as nocturnal heart palpitations increased concerningly.
Naturally, positive reception would enable further development ambitions for Wildemann and his team.
“We aspire to provide ongoing game support. Our feature roadmap includes what we term the 1.1 update list.
“Modification support for player book collections represents one consideration. We contemplated this feature but couldn’t implement it for initial release.
“We absolutely plan additional content responding to player feedback post-launch.
“Romance content frequently receives player requests, potentially arriving through DLC or significant updates, though plans remain flexible.
“Switch version interest appears substantial. We’re investigating possibilities without confirmed commitments currently. Mobile adaptation presents intriguing opportunities too, though our team lacks platform familiarity. Advertisement-free gaming and absence of in-app purchases represent core values, requiring careful mobile value proposition development.”
